Chinas BYD Aggressive Lithium Battery Hybrid Bus Production

History

Wang Chuanfu, the owner of Xi’an Qinchuan Automobile, established BYD vehicle in January 2003 following BYD’s acquisition of the business. The F3, BYD’s first car, was unveiled in 2005. 2008 witnessed the start of BYD’s production of the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the F3DM. 2009 saw the introduction of the battery-electric BYD e6 into production.

BYD decided to focus on manufacturing alternative energy vehicles and stopped making cars with internal combustion engines in March 2022. Apart from marketing luxurious vehicles under the Denza, Yangwang, and Fangchengbao brands, the company also offers vehicles under the primary BYD brand.

Since 2020, BYD Auto has seen a significant sales increase as a result of the growing market share of new energy cars in China, following a period of decline in profit and sales. In the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD surpassed Tesla to take the lead in the global battery electric vehicle sales market.

BYD has also surpassed Volkswagen, which has held the top spot since the Chinese automobile sector was liberalized, to become the best-selling car brand in China as of the first quarter of 2023. The corporation has been increasing passenger car sales into international markets in South America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Oceania since 2021.

The business is distinguished by its deep vertical integration, which makes use of BYD Group’s experience in manufacturing batteries and other associated parts, including electronic controls and electric motors. With the exception of tires and windows, all parts of BYD automobiles are said to be internally manufactured by the BYD company. With the operation of lithium mines, processing, battery manufacturing, and an internal computer chip unit, the group guarantees flexibility and control over output volume and cost.

As of the first half of 2022, BYD’s battery division, FinDreams Battery, is the third largest producer of electric vehicle batteries worldwide. It focuses on producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, sometimes known as Blade batteries.

Products

BYD Auto offers a wide variety of vehicle types, including large trucks, sedans, hatchbacks, MPVs, SUVs, and various-sized battery-electric buses and coaches. Internal combustion engine (ICE) cars were produced by the firm until 2022, when it announced that it would focus on new energy cars.

The Ocean Series, introduced by the Dolphin in 2021, and the Dynasty Series, introduced by the Qin in 2012, are the two main “series” into which the BYD brand divides its array of personal passenger automobiles.

The Dynasty Network and the Ocean Network are two different sales networks that provide these series. Additionally, each series uses different telematics-related mobile apps. While Ocean Series vehicles target younger customers by adopting the concept design of “Marine Aesthetics” and using waves and flowing lines as the main theme, Dynasty Series vehicles concentrate on high-end vehicles and adopt dragon-inspired designs.

The Ocean Series is further subdivided into the Warship Series (Destroyer and frigate), which are plug-in hybrid DM-i vehicles, and the Model Series, which consists of models with names derived from marine animals. The “e” series refers to fleet-oriented vehicles used for ride-hailing and taxi services. Vehicles come in three varieties: battery electric, which is commonly identified by the EV suffix; plug-in hybrid electric system called DM-i; and performance-oriented Dual Mode with all-wheel drive, or DM-p.

ByD Brands

Fangchengbao

The SUV brand Fangchengbao is owned by BYD Auto and is registered in the English language as Formula Bao. With goods catering to off-road and track-focused niches, BYD positioned the brand with “professional” and “personalized” vehicles. June 9, 2023, saw the announcement of the brand. While BYD depends on a network of dealerships, the brand runs its own direct sales outlets.

Presently available passenger vehicle powertrain options  Fangchengbao debuted the Bao 5, a plug-in hybrid SUV, on August 16, 2023. It made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show and is built on the DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform, which is exclusive to Fangchengbao.

Denza

Denza is a luxury electric vehicle production joint venture with Mercedes-Benz AG (formerly Daimler AG). May 2010 saw its creation. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class from an earlier generation served as the basis for its debut vehicle, the Denza 500. Through an equity transfer in 2021, Daimler decreased its stake from 50% to 10%, making BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. the largest shareholder at 90%. The Denza N7 SUV and the Denza D9 minivan, which were released in 2022 and 2023, respectively, brought new life to the brand lineup.

In order to compete with European luxury brands, BYD’s premium car brand, Yangwang, is priced above CN¥1 million, or roughly US$140,000. The brand and its debut model, the U8 off-road plug-in hybrid SUV featuring BYD’s own e4 individual wheel drive technology, were unveiled on January 5, 2023, at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The U9 battery electric supercar followed.

Taxis and light commercial vehicles.

The BYD e6, which debuted in 2009 as the company’s first battery-electric car, are mostly sold as taxis. In addition to being a part of ride-sharing app fleets, it has been utilized as a taxi in numerous Chinese, European, and other Asian cities.[155] Additionally, BYD provided windowed vans and battery electric panel vans, such as the T3/ETP3 and V3.

Buses

Battery-electric buses from BYD come in a range of shapes and sizes, including school buses, long-distance coaches, articulated buses, and single- and double-deck buses. By 2023, BYD will have shipped more than 100,000 battery-electric buses throughout the world. BYD’s Lancaster, California, plant is where the company produces its buses for the North American market. It is the biggest producer of battery-electric buses in North America.

Trucks

By 2021, BYD will rank among the world’s biggest producers of battery-electric trucks, with over 8,000 vehicles in operation worldwide. More than 200 battery-electric trucks are currently in use across the US thanks to its sales. It manufactures construction vehicles, garbage trucks, street sweeper trucks, mining trucks, Class 5, Class 6, and Class 7 and Class 8 trucks.

Technical Advances

Dual Mode (DM) Plug-in Hybrid electric systems

2008 saw the debut of BYD DM (dual mode) hybrid technology on the BYD F3DM and BYD M3 DM, among other cars. It was made up of an electric motor, batteries, and a traditional internal combustion engine and transmission.

DM-p/DM-i

The DM technology was superseded by the DM-i and DM-p. Efficiency-focused front-wheel drive versions are designated with DM-i, and performance-focused all-wheel drive variants are designated with DM-p. The models have a main electric motor that can run on batteries or an electric generator and a high-efficiency gasoline engine (Xiaoyun) that can power an electric generator. They use series-parallel plug-in hybrid technology with a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). Utilizing the Atkinson cycle, the Xiaoyun engine boasts a very high compression ratio (CR) of 15.5, as well as a brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of 43%—allegedly the greatest in the world for a production gasoline engine.

The hybrid drivetrain uses context-dependent components to provide driving power: battery only, battery + electrical generator mode, engine only mode (only at high speeds due to lack of transmission), and battery + engine mode. The generator runs the engine and charges the batteries when conditions permit. The design allows the engine to remain in its high-efficiency zone.

Three power levels (codenamed EHS132, EHS145, and EHS160) are available for the DM-i, with 1.5-liter, 1.5-liter or 1.5-liter turbocharged, and 1.5-liter turbocharged Xiaoyun engines, respectively.

According to rumors that first surfaced in January 2024, BYD intends to end production of the pouch-style batteries used in its plug-in hybrid cars by 2025 in order to address issues with durability and the possibility of electrolyte leaks. The business will now utilize “Short Blade” prismatic batteries in its plug-in hybrid automobiles.

Blade Battery

The Blade battery is an electric vehicle lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is designed and produced by FinDreams Battery, a BYD Company subsidiary. The BYD Han used it for the first time in 2020. Other automakers have used the battery, which is said to be safer and thinner than standard electric vehicle batteries. According to BYD, the Blade battery exhibited no smoke or fire after being penetrated by a nail in a nail penetration test, and its surface temperature only rose to 30 to 60 °C (86 to 140 °F). A three-layered lithium battery would overheat to 500 °C (932 °F) in the same test and burn.
