CNN did a short piece on Green Jobs in their 07-25-09 TV programming. Green jobs, or green-collar jobs, are being “created” taking advantages billion of dollars of new programs and initiatives made available by the Obama administration. Phil Angelides, chair of the Apollo Alliance, a coalition of business, labor and environmental groups championing green employment, in an article at time.com titled “What Is a Green-Collar Job, Exactly?,” defines a green job this way:

It has to pay decent wages and benefits that can support a family. It has to be part of a real career path, with upward mobility. And it needs to reduce waste and pollution and benefit the environment.

Green jobs deals in the technologies, in the advancement of energy reduction, in the construction methods to build more efficiently, to champion renewable energy, and to champion new ways of transportation, according to Bill Thomas, an ecopreneur.

The real question is: how does one get into one of these jobs? Here are some ideas:

• For those already in the workforce, or looking for an new opportunity: get on the web to do research, get into groups including those on LinkedIn, read up on news and reports on green and clean ways of doing business, and start learning. The key is to understand where the green jobs are, and then start your plan to make a transition of your existing skillsets into those that green jobs require.
• For college students wanting to get into green jobs: go beg, borrow and steal an internship at a green company; volunteer in local green organizations, coalitions and non-profits and get involved in green activities. Do whatever you can to get into one! Also join professional associations to meet people and network too.
